Metroji clue #20

Baku in five emoji

Azerbaijan

A city on a peninsula sticking into the Caspian, where oil was being collected by hand before anyone drilled for it anywhere else. The old town and the glass towers are about a kilometre apart.

What each emoji refers to

The Caspian is the largest inland body of water on earth, and whether it counts as a sea is a legal argument as much as a geographical one.
The Flame Towers are lit to look like fire after dark.
Gas seeping through the rock at Yanar Dag has been burning on the hillside for as long as anyone has recorded it.
The first mechanically drilled oil wells went in here in the 1840s, and by 1900 the area was producing about half the world's supply.
Icherisheher is the walled old town, with the Maiden Tower nobody has satisfactorily explained.
