Metroji clue #88

Cancún in five emoji

Mexico

A resort city that did not exist in 1970. The Mexican government ran a study to pick the best spot for a tourist industry and then built one from nothing.

What each emoji refers to

The hotel zone is a barrier island shaped like a seven, with the lagoon on one side and the sea on the other.
There were a few hundred people here before construction started, mostly on Isla Mujeres.
The sand is coral rather than quartz, which is why it stays cool enough to walk on at midday.
Hurricane season runs June to November, and Wilma sat over the city for two days in 2005.
The Mesoamerican reef runs south from here and is the second longest barrier reef in the world.
