Metroji clue #97

Muscat in five emoji

Oman

A capital with no towers, because building heights are capped and new work has to follow the old style. It runs for fifty kilometres along the coast between mountains and sea.

What each emoji refers to

Frankincense comes from trees in Dhofar in the south and is still burned in houses rather than kept for ceremony.
The Hajar mountains come almost to the water, so the city fills the gaps between bare rock.
Al Jalali and Al Mirani were built by the Portuguese in the 1580s to hold the harbour entrance.
Dhows are still built by hand at Sur down the coast, using the same shapes that carried the Indian Ocean trade.
Green turtles nest at Ras al Jinz in numbers, and the beach is managed as a reserve.
