Metroji clue #147

Naypyidaw in five emoji

Myanmar

A capital announced in 2005 with almost no warning, built inland on empty ground, and still largely empty. Nobody outside the government has fully explained why.

What each emoji refers to

The main boulevard has twenty lanes and is usually photographed with nothing on it at all.
The Uppatasanti pagoda is a near copy of the Shwedagon in Yangon, built about thirty centimetres shorter.
The name is usually translated as abode of kings, and the site was chosen by advisers rather than planners.
Burma was the largest rice exporter in the world before the Second World War.
White elephants are kept in an enclosure near the pagoda, because possessing one has signalled a rightful ruler for centuries.
