Metroji clue #110

Skopje in five emoji

North Macedonia

An earthquake flattened most of the city in 1963 and it was rebuilt in concrete. Then in about five years after 2010 it was covered in statues.

What each emoji refers to

The Skopje 2014 project put up hundreds of statues, fountains and facades, and the argument about it has not finished.
The Stone Bridge is Ottoman, survived the earthquake, and is the one old thing at the centre of all the new.
Vodno rises above the city with a very large illuminated cross on top of it.
Mother Teresa was born here in 1910 and left at eighteen. The house is gone and a memorial stands on the site.
The rebuilt national theatre is a reconstruction of the one the earthquake destroyed, put back in the 2010s.
