Metroji clue #142

Alexandria in five emoji

Egypt

Founded by Alexander in 331 BC and the intellectual centre of the ancient Mediterranean for centuries. Almost none of that is still standing above ground.

What each emoji refers to

The ancient library is gone and the argument about how continues. A new one opened on roughly the site in 2002.
The Pharos lighthouse was one of the seven wonders. Earthquakes brought it down and its stones went into the fort on the same spot.
The fish market sells the morning catch and the restaurants behind it cook whatever you carry in.
Pompey's Pillar and the catacombs are what is left at ground level of the Greek and Roman city.
Part of the royal quarter, including what may be Cleopatra's palace, is underwater in the eastern harbour.
